Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus devices will be their most powerful devices to date. According to a report from Korean publication ETNews, the phones will be the first to have “Advanced facial tracking, stereo speakers, and 3D emojis.” If this all sounds a bit familiar, it’s because these are features that were initially introduced with Apple’s iPhone X last fall. Samsung’s 3D Emoji will allegedly be more powerful, and more responsive than Apple’s, although exactly how remains yet to be seen.
Samsung is also improving the security functions on it’s new flagship devices. Both facial recognition and their iris scanner will reportedly receive a bump in accuracy and integration. The fingerprint scanner will also be moved from the right of the camera, to just below it (Thank God). There’s also going to be security improvements within Samsung Pay, to help bolster their already widely adopted cashless payment system.
On the user experience side, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will also feature improved audio playback and rear cameras. The Stereo speakers will be place at the top and bottom of the phone, which could be both good and bad. Good because of the improved sound, bad because if the phone is rotated sideways your hands could muffle them. Both phones will also have dual cameras on the back which is similar to the setup from the Note 8.
If all of these updates are actually implemented, The S9 and S9 Plus will undoubtedly be Samsung’s best devices ever. The inclusion of 3D Emoji and advanced facial tracking feels like a no brainer, and it’ll be interesting to see exactly how Samsung implements them into their ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are expected to be unveiled during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
